Short Film Celebrates Sabahan Heroes Bringing Fibre to Remote Communities

Kota Kinabalu, May 2025 — In celebration of Pesta Kaamatan, Yes 5G — the telecommunications arm of YTL Communications — has released a short film honouring the Sabahan engineers, educators and community members behind one of Malaysia’s largest rural fibre deployment initiatives.

The film, Fibrising Sabah — Powered by People, Connected by Yes offers a rare ground-level view into the challenges and triumphs of delivering affordable, high-speed fibre internet to some of Sabah’s most underserved communities — many of which previously relied on limited-to-no connectivity.

It highlights authentic, personal stories from those on the ground: the educators guiding students online for the first time, the artisans finding new audiences and the local engineers navigating dense jungle terrain to lay the foundations for digital inclusion.

Commissioned under a mandate from Kementerian Komunikasi (KKOM) to deploy fibre across 636 sites, Yes 5G has laid more than 1,200 kilometres of fibre infrastructure across Sabah’s remote regions – delivering connectivity to over 2,000 families in rural areas including Ranau, Pitas, Penampang, Kudat and Kota Belud.

The entire rollout — from infrastructure to customer support — is executed by a 100% Sabahan workforce, whose local knowledge and lived experience have been critical in overcoming logistical, geographic and environmental barriers.

“This project is not just about internet access – it is about giving every Malaysian, regardless of geography, the tools to participate in the digital economy,” said Wing K. Lee, Chief Executive Officer of YTL Communications. “We believe that connectivity is a fundamental right, and Sabah represents our commitment to nation-building at its most essential level by reaching those who are too often left behind,” he added.

With access to high-speed fibre broadband, rural communities now have the potential to experience meaningful change:

  • Small businesses can tap into broader markets through digital platforms
  • Students gain the opportunity to explore e-learning tools and online education
  • New pathways may emerge for economic mobility, digital literacy and community development

To ensure this connectivity is truly accessible, Yes 5G offers one of the most affordable fibre plans in Malaysia — enabling more families residing in Sabah to enjoy high-speed internet at sustainable price points.

  • 300Mbps fibre at RM35/month — Malaysia’s lowest-priced high-speed fibre plan with uncapped data
  • Free phone and SIM card with every sign-up
  • Free WiFi router and installation
